With the new season in full flow and subscription notices wining their way to all members in the coming days we are delighted to announce or new committee to you. As I’m sure you are aware from previous correspondence that the management structure at the club has had an update in line with the guidance taken from Scottish Golf and we look forward to implementing this in the coming years.
I would like to thank previous committee members who have taken the club to where it is today, and we will look to build on this moving forward. I would also like to thank those who showed interest in the Captain and Vice-Captain positions and look forward to the level of interest continuing in the future.
The new Captain of Askernish Golf Club for the coming seasons is Martin Jacobs, Martin will be assisted in his role by Vice-Captain Billy Low and they will join the Management Committee with immediate effect, I personally wish you well and thank you in advance for agreeing to take up the positions. This ensures that all membership categories are represented on the committee, with John Roe continuing in his role as President of the Club.
Message/Introduction from the Captain, Martin Jacobs.
Firstly, I’d like to say how privileged and honoured I am to be Captain at Askernish Golf Club.
I have played at Askernish for several years as a visitor, becoming a full member and making Askernish my home club in 2022.
Previously I played most of my golf in Glasgow and retain a country membership at Glasgow Golf Club.
I served as a Council Member with Balmore Golf Club where I qualified as a PGA Level One Golf Coach for juniors and beginners. With help from Scottish Golf, we were able to set up Clubgolf offering weekly coaching activities for juniors during school summer holidays.
I believe opportunities exist for Askernish to offer similar junior golf activities; in golf coaching and developing further footgolf.
Growing the membership of Askernish not just with junior members, but all members of our community is one of the key objectives for the club and I hope that I and the existing members can help in achieving this during the next few years.
For the members that do not know me I am originally from Windsor and moved to Glasgow in 2006. I have been associated with South Uist through my partner who comes from Howmore for almost twenty years. In 2020 we were fortunate to buy our house in Howmore and call South Uist home.
I mostly play Askernish on Sunday mornings and when work commitments allow during the week. Hopefully during the next few months, I will have the opportunity to meet and play golf with many of you at Askernish so that your views and ideas on how our amazing and unique golf course and club can be further improved can be brought to the club committee.
I know that many of the existing members worked tirelessly during the restoration and development of the course bringing it to fruition in 2008 for the official opening of the course we all now play.
I hope I can continue with the amazing work those members put into Askernish. I know that they and the past Captain Colin Russell will continue to support the club as we move forward into the next phases of development and that you will support me as your Club Captain for 2023 and beyond.
Message/Introduction from the Vice-Captain, Billy Low.
I’m from Glasgow. I started playing golf during lock down in 2020 as a means to get outdoors and exercise. It was then I met my partner Kenna Campbell who is from South Uist and a member of Askernish. I’m a member of Bearsden golf club in Glasgow and past member of The Carrick/Wee Demon & Milngavie Golf Club. Kenna and I are trying to play every golf course in Scotland. We’ve played 119 to date with St Andrews Old course being the most recent.
I’m very much looking forward to taking up the role as vice-captain at Askernish and supporting our Captain. I feel having played golf throughout Scotland this gives me a unique perspective and insight into how other golf clubs operate and I hope to bring some of that knowledge and experience of what works and what doesn’t to help improve Askernish golf club for members and visitors.
The guys are in the process of updating there clubV1 apps with a picture so you will all be able to say hello if you see them around the club.
