Good things come to those who wait. Practice makes perfect. Consistency breeds success. For Brian Smith these clichés are little consolation as it’s been a long season with plenty of golf played and practice in his own back garden ‘driving range’ but with and little reward.
Infact Brian’s handicap has only changed by 0.1 since the start of the season, a sign of his incredible consistency which has seen him dubbed “Mr Consistency”.
All of that was until the September Medal as, following on from a furious weekend of Club Championship action, the September Medal was a much calmer affair. The breezy conditions meant that low-scoring was going to be challenging… but certainly not impossible.
A continuation of the prior weekend’s ‘clash-of-the-titans’ Donald MacInnes and John Kemp both came in with good round of 70 nett, but this weekend it was Donald who came out on top with the better inward half.
However, both players were eclipsed by Brian Smith who broke his duck for 2011 and finally won a competiton. Brian has finished 2nd and 3rd in a hatful of competitions this year but it took him until the second-last competition of the summer season to get the rewards for (let’s be honest) an incredible amount of practice.
According to his playing partners, Brian’s round of 69 nett could have been improved upon drastically if his putting had been better…. So we can expect Brian’s next DIY project to be a putting green in his back garden!
One quick point – with his handicap now down at 12, he will have a reduced handicap buffer-zone to play-to, surely this will see him drop his other 2011 moniker Brian “Buffer Zone” Smith! There are no related files for this news item.
